Process for producing 1-chloroalkanes or 1-chloroalkenes with 8 to 22, in particular 10 to 18, carbon atoms by esterification of the corresponding OH compounds with hydrogen chloride at temperatures between 120 and 180 DEG C in the presence of zinc chloride as catlyst. The yield of the desired compounds is increased if 15 to 50 wt.% of dialk-1-yl or dialken-1-ylether with alkyl groups of suitable length, referred to alkan-1-ols or alken-1-ols, is added to the reaction mixture.
