The filter cartridge is closed at its lower end by a cover which also acts as a base for the filter casing. This cover is provided with inlet and outlet connections for the liquid being filtered. An open-topped vertical tube is fitted to the cover inside the filter cartridge, and is perforated by a number of openings near its base. Alternatively, the filter cartridge material may be surrounded by a tube with perforations at its lower end and conencted to the upper end cap of the filter cartridge at its upper end. These tubes may be in integral part of the replaceable filter cartridge, or alternatively, they may be connected to the filter casing at their lower ends and sealed to the cartridge upper cap at their upper ends. As a further alternative, the vertical tube may be located between two layers of filter material in the cartridge. USE/ADVANTAGE - This invention comprises a tubular cartridge filter, in partic. as used for fluids heavily contaminated with colloidal materials such as are encountered in the wine and beer production industries. A vertical cartridge filter with bottom inlet and outlet connections is proposed which greatly reduces uneven loading of the filter element and allows a uniform cleaning by a flushing fluid during regeneration.
