A ball check valve obviates the need to incorporate additional shut-off elements in conduit systems in which ball check valves are used. This ball check valve has a shut-off (7) which can be placed in its closing position by means of an externally actuated control element (12), so that the valve can prevent the passage of liquid in the desired direction of flow and in the reverse direction. To enable the column of liquid above the ball to be evacuated, possibly from below, the ball (7) can be lifted by another control element (20) which acts on its surface from below.
