This is a method and associated appts. for removing metal from used oils, and for their further treatment, and is partic intended for used oils from internal combustion engines and gearboxes. The oil is mixed, in a mixing chamber, with water, additives, salts, and/or an acid, heated to 50-90 deg.C, and then seped, continuously in a three-phase decanter, into water-conting heavy-metal salt, water, and demetallised water-conting oil. The water is recycled and the oil is further processed. Variants claimed include the further processing of the oil and disposal of the heavy-metal salt, and the appts, used throughout. USE/ADVANTAGE - Heavy metals in used oils are a drawback in recycling the oils or in preparing them for use as fuel oils that comply with regulatory requirements. A known method for demetallising used oils is discontinuous, costly and time-consuming. The proposed method, which is continuous, overcomes these difficulties, and gases from burning the reclaimed oil within heavy-metal limits.
