The layer of tobacco (5) is piled up against the conveyor belt (2) by the airflow (6). The trimmer (7) removes the superfluous tobacco and forms the final layer (10) which will then be wrapped in the paper to constitute the roll. The measuring unit (13) measures the thickness of the layer (5) by means of the attenuation of a ray, while the measuring unit (14) measures the degree of porosity of the layer by virtue of the pressure drop between the underside and the upper side of the layer. These two data are transmitted to the calculation unit (19) which forms the parameter (F), transmitted to the central unit (17) which supplies to the code converter (16) the pulses actuating the encoder (15) of the motor (11). The latter regulates the thickness of the layer (10).
