[Also in Division C2] A pharmaceutic composition comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle and a compound of the formula wherein each of X and Y is an OR, SR or NR, R 2 group or a halogen atom wherein R is H or a substituted or unsubstiuted hydrocarbyl or heterocyclic radical and each of R 1 and R 2 is as defined for R, or NR, R 2 is a residue of a cyclic amine with the proviso that X and Y are not both OR or both halogen atoms and that one of X and Y is not OR when the other is halogen, each of R 6 and R 7 is H, a C 1 -C 6 alkyl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, aryl, C 2 -C 6 -alkenyl or -alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, or heteroaryl group and R 8 is phenylene or substituted phenylene or a polymethylene group containing 2 to 4 CH 2 radicals, or an organic or inorganic salt of such compounds in which one of X and Y is OH or SH. The composition may be in the form of a tablet, capsule or pill, solution or suspension or in injectable form with a sterile isotonic liquid diluent. The defined phosphorus compound may also be used as active ingredients in antiseptic compositions containing a diluent or carrier. When the products are used pharmaceutically they may be admixed with other antibacterial agents such as penicillin, streptomycin or novobiocin.</p> |
