NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 to R3 are H or lower alkyl; R is H or acetyl) and its salt. EXAMPLE:5-Acetoxy-1-methylglycocyamidine. USE:A reagent for the diagnosis of renal disorder. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I wherein R is acetyl is produced by protecting the 1-, 3- and/or 2-amino groups of the compound of formula II with a conventional amino-protecting group such as t-butoxycarbonyl, treating the product with an oxidizing agent such as lead tetraacetate to introduce acetoxy group to the 5-site and deprotecting the t-butoxycarbonyl with trifluoroacetic acid, etc. Another compound of formula I wherein R is H can be produced by reducing the acetoxy group of the above product by conventional process.
