PURPOSE:To prevent production of flicker by shielding light with a mechanical shutter just after a signal charge in a 2nd field is transferred to a vertical transfer section till the transfer of the signal charge of the 2nd field transferred to the vertical transfer section to a charge accumulating section is finished. CONSTITUTION:A system controller 12 generates an iris control signal controlling an iris 20 so that a point A is interposed between a lens 19 and a solid-state image pickup element 11 to an iris drive circuit 21 for a period between the end of a vertical blanking period of a 1st field and the end of a vertical blanking period of a 2nd field. Then the incident light to the solid-state image pickup element 11 is shut to close the shutter. Thus, the level difference between the signal of the 1st field and the signal of the 2nd field caused due to the effect of smear is eliminated to prevent the production of flicker.
