Methylvinyl ketone prepn - from 1-hydroxybutan-3-one in presence of water, acid and chloride

Dehydration of CH3COCH2CH2OH to CH3COCH=CH2 which is a raw material for prepn. of dyes, plastics and resins, takes place in aq. soln. contg. =10 wt.% acid of >=1.10-6 dissociation const. and also >=10 wr.% alkali- NH4 and/or alkaline earth chloride. Reaction is effected e.g. at 0-200 (60-120) degrees C. opt. under press. esp. continuously. Inert solvents, esp. 5-100 wt.% /wt. reactants, may be used.
