The invention relates to a method of frequency multiplexing, making it possible to transcode into a standard video signal a high-definition black and white video signal having twice as many lines and twice as many dots per line. The high-definition image 1 is digitised 2, then stored in 3 or 4, alternately for each image. The processor 8 calculates: a full-band signal representing every second dot and every second line of the image, and two reduced-band signals relating to the inter-dot and inter-line differential information, then stacks them in 5 or 6, alternately for each image. These signals are later retranscribed into analog 10, 11, 12 and then multiplexed with the aid of an NTSC, PAL or SECAM standard coder 13. The process according to the invention is more particularly intended for storing still images and cinematographic films, on standard video discs. <IMAGE>
