The invention relates to a device for the remote transmission of documents especially of the fax kind, comprising a transmitter unit and a receiver unit which can communicate across a public network, and comprising coding means which are able, if required, to encipher the information travelling over the said network. According to the invention, the transmitter unit is equipped with variable-key coding means, with means allowing the selection of a particular key for each document, whilst the transmission comprises a non-coded preamble identifying the addressee, and a coded document body, and the receiver unit comprises: - means for receiving the information thus transmitted; - a mass memory M1, M2 able to store and match up the preamble and the body of each document; - control means OC able to search for a document by its preamble on identifying the addressee, and to receive the said particular key; and - means DY for decoding the coded document which are able, in response to the particular key, to deliver an uncoded representation of the document. <IMAGE>
