A process for the denitrification and simultaneous sweetening (softening) of water and device for carrying out this process, the process being characterised in that it essential consists in circulating the water, coming from a distribution line 1, into a closed reservoir 2, through a mixture 3 of strongly acidic cationic resins and strongly basic anionic resins, diverting, at the inlet to the reservoir 2, a part of the water coming from the distribution line 1 directly into the use line 4 of the reservoir 2 and, at regular intervals, subjecting the mixture of resins 3 to rinsing and salt treatment in counter-current. <IMAGE>
