A control system for a continuously variable transmission (Fig. 2a) for a motor vehicle has a hydraulic circuit (Fig. 2a,2b) supervised by a control unit (70) which adjusts the transmission ratio. To improve starting characteristic when the engine is cold, the transmission ratio changing speed is reduced when the engine is cold so as to prevent the decrease of the vehicle speed at acceleration. This is achieved by adjusting a coefficient in a transmission ratio changing speed calculation carried out by the control unit (70), when the engine temperature is below a predetermined level. |
