A low- or no-silica phosphate glass useful as a high average power laser medium and having a high thermal conductivity, K90 DEG C > 0.8 W/mK, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, alpha 20 DEG -300 DEG C < 90x10<-><7>/ DEG C, consisting essentially of (on a batch composition basis): <TABLE> whereby said glass has K90 DEG C > 0.8 W/mK, and alpha 20-300 DEG C < 90x10<-><7>/ DEG C. The Nd2O3 can be replaced by other lasing species.
