A shield--type tunnelling machine consists of a cylindrical casing (1) in front and rear sections (2, 3), connected by a mechanism (4) which permits them to rotate relative to one another. The front section is equipped with an actuator (21) and has a spiral (22) on its outer surface, while the rear section has straight fins (23) which prevent it from rotating. The mechanism which enables the two sections to rotate relative to one another is in the form of a differential planetary mechanism, the fixed central gear of which is provided by a toothed ring (5) on the inner surface of the rear section, meshing with the driven gears (6) of double satellites (7), the driving gears (8) of which mesh with a toothed ring (9) on the inner surface of the front section, which acts as the differential's driven central gear. The dobule satellites are connected to a carrier ring (10) lying concentrically with the casing and linked kinematically to the shaft (11) of a drive motor (12). The machine also has mechanisms (16, 25) to move the rear section and to discharge the rock.
