Electrolytic batteries with recirculating systems - use membrane surrounding them permeable to gases but not to liq. for safety in malfunctions

Electrical battery, which uses external functions to exchange electrolyte, supply or remove reactants etc., pref. separates the electrolyte contg. parts and surrounds them with a container. The container comprises at least partly material which is permeable to gases but prevents liq. electrolyte from penetrating it. The material used for this container is pref. a hydrophobic, porous surface pref. made of porous (PTFE). The battery used can be a lead-acid or alkaline battery or a metal-halogen accumulator. Also claimed is the use of the membrane in a battery of the type hydrogen/oxygen cell. USE/ADVANTAGE - Membrane used prevents leaks from having any detrimental effects outside the battery, which is esp. important when the battery is used in space-flight. It is practical to bundle all conduits between the battery and its external operations and surround this with a membrane, which also gives added mechanical strength to the connections.
