The screwed spindle press has a flywheel (6) which can be connected to the spindle by means of a hydraulically actuated clutch. The clutch is engaged only during the downstroke and during a part of the upstroke. The clutch has a clutch plate (12) which has a friction lining (12') which is pressed against the flywheel (6) by a pressure ring (10). The pressure ring (10) is actuated by a number of pistons (20). The initial clearance (5) between the ring (10) and the clutch lining (12') is controlled by delivering a measured quantity of hydraulic fluid to the annular chamber (42) on the underside of the actuating piston (41).
