The invention relates to the use of the thiazoles of the formula in which R1 denotes a halogen atom, an alkyl group or a trifluoromethyl group, R3 denotes a hydrogen atom or R3 and R4 together denote an ethylene group or an alkoxycarbonylmethylene group, R4 denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group which is optionally substituted in the 2- or 3-position by an hydroxyl group and R5 denotes a methoxy group substituted by a carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aminocarbonyl, alkylaminocarbonyl, hydroxymethyl, alkoxymethyl, aminomethyl or alkylaminomethyl group or denotes a 2-carboxy-1- methylethenyl or 2-alkoxycarbonyl-1-methylethenyl group, optical isomers thereof and diastereomers thereof as well as acid addition salts thereof as performance-promoting agents for animals.
