ELECTRODE FOR ELECTROSPARK MACHINING AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

PURPOSE:To obtain electrodes of reduced consumption, increased working accuracy and working speed in electrospark machining by binding amorphous carbon to the graphitized electrode material. CONSTITUTION:Amorphous carbon is bonded to at least the surface layer (less than 20mm for the electrode surface measuring 600X400X200mm) of the graphitized electrode material to give the subject electrode for electrospark machining. The electrode is produced by impregnating at least the surface layer of the graphitized electrode material with tar or pitch of high density and high carbonization rate or an impregnating agent which forms amorphous carbon by the pyrolysis such as a thermosetting resin and firing the impregnated product at a temperature higher than the pyrolytic point of the impregnating agent. The thermosetting resin as an impregnating agent is preferably condensed- ring aromatic thermosetting resin, because the resin can be omitted the repetition of impregnation and calcination processes.
