1373768 Cigarettes K H STEIGERWALD 12 Nov 1971 [21 Nov 1970] 52620/71 Heading A2C A cigarette comprising a cord 2 of smokable material, Fig. 1, includes a secondary air channel 14 extending longitudinally of the cord 2, the channel 14 being closed against the suction end of the filler 2 and open towards the other end and being at least partly sealed at its circumference by a sealing wall 16 which progressively loses its sealing properties under the influence of the combustion process as the latter proceeds along the filler 2 during the smoking process, and a connector including at least one smoke impervious channel 36 is provided between the channel 14 and the ambient air adjacent the closed end of the channel 14 whereby the connector is separated from the suction path for the smoke. The sealing wall 16 may be a cigarette paper or tobacco foil tube, or a bonding agent such as cellulose acetate solution may be applied to the interior surface of the hollow cord 2 to seal it. As can be seen in Fig. 2, which is an exploded partial view of Fig. 1 with the cigarette rotated by 90‹ about its axis, the connector body 38 includes smoke channels 46 connecting the cord 2 with a filter 8. A rotatable control sleeve with wedge-shaped apertures may be used to adjustably restrict the secondary air flow 44 through the openings 42. A number of other embodiments are described which include one or more of the following features: a channel 14 which increases in diameter towards the suction end of the cord 2; a channel 14 filled with a supporting material such as a coarse tobacco structure or a loose yet relatively stiff material produced by bonding tobacco dust with cellulose acetate solution; a plurality of secondary air channels 14 provided in the outer circumference of the cord 2 (Figs. 7, 8) with perforations 56 in the wrapper 4 over part of its length nearest the igniting end and overlying the channels 14; additional channels connected to and depending laterally from a central channel 14; a wrapper 4 comprising two plies (62, 64), Fig. 19 (not shown), of different thermal expansion, e.g. two kinds of paper, and provided with flap-like cuts which open due to deformation at the approach of the combustion zone 20; and a perforated wrapper with the perforations sealed by a material that will lose its coherence as the combustion zone 20 approaches. |
