PURPOSE:To obtain a thermally written liquid-crystal light bulb which has a positive mode and utilizes a laser beam, by forming a uniform transparent conductive film for heat generation on one of two substrates which sandwich Sm liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:On a transparent substrate 12, a transparent conductive film 13, a light-absorptive film 14, a reflective film 15, and an oriented film 16 are formed. On the other transparent substrate 19, a transparent conductive film 18 and a liquid-crystal oriented film 16 are formed, and smectic liquid crystal is sealed between both the substrates. By applying a voltage to the transparent conductive film 13, heat is generated to change the whole liquid crystal in a liquid-crystal light valve from smectic phase to liquid phase, and thus a storage state by quenching effect is realized, obtaining display whose entire surface is black. By irradiation with a laser beam, a white line is drawn to realize the display in positive mode. The conductive film 13 for heat generation is formed best between the glass substrate 12 and light-absorptive layer 14 because of less absorption of the laser light. |
