PURPOSE:To easily and efficiently segment areas by determining a threshold in accordance with the frequency distribution chart of picture information of respective picture elements constituting the area inputted by a coordinate designating means and converting picture information based on the threshold with an information converting means. CONSTITUTION:A processing unit 11 generates the frequency distribution chart of picture information, for example, the density values of respective picture elements constituting the area inputted by a coordinate designating means 16 and determines the proper number of thresholds based on the variance of the frequency distribution chart and converts picture in formation (density value) based on thresholds by an information converting means constituted of an area memory 13 and a look up table 15 to display an original picture. The displayed picture keeps the shape of the original picture and is expressed with the color change emphasized (pseudo color picture), and continuous areas expressed in the same color can be extracted with one segmenting work. Consequently, areas to be segmented are designated repeatedly to easily join and segment areas expressed in different colors. |
