PURPOSE: To obtian the subject medicinal agent containing a specific chromophore and a gel-forming ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer, and ensuring ultraviolet effect to be blocked when put into the eye(s). CONSTITUTION: This medicinal agent for ophthalmic use with a viscosity of 40,000-300,000cp contains a specified amount of a chromophore selected from octyl methoxycinnamate (A) and 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxy) propoxybenzophenone (B) and 2-8wt.% of a gel-forming ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer >1,000,000 in molecular weight. Formulation of the chromophore A at 2-7.5wt.% attains entire blocking of UV-B radiation (wavelength: 290-350nm), formulation of the chromophore B at 1-8wt.% entire blocking of UV-B radiation and partial blocking of UV-A radiation (wavelength: 325-420nm), formulation of the chromophore B at 1.5-4.0wt.% entire blocking of UV-A radiation, and formulation of the even mixture of the chromophores A and B at 1-8wt.% entire blocking of the whole UV radiation.
