PURPOSE: To obtain a catalytic oxidation and reduction converter for internal combustion engine exhaust gases, which is not poisoned by lead or sulfur in gasoline and receives no thermal shock by using oxide of a metal such as Cr or Mn or an oxide mixture. CONSTITUTION: A catalyst comprising oxide of a metal such as Cr, Mn or Fe or an oxide mixture is used as a catalytic oxidation and reduction converter for the exhaust gases of engines operating on leaded gasoline, lead-free gasoline and alcohol. The converter is economical, is not poisoned by lead or sulfur contained in gasoline, receives no thermal shock and does not generate any pollutants.
