The control device includes a thrust cylinder 5 suitably mounted on a part of one of the vehicles so as automatically to make the distance separating the vehicle vary as a function of their relative position as detected by a sensor-feeler assembly 7-8; the circuit for controlling the thrust cylinder 5 is rigidly attached to means capable of voluntarily and automatically bringing the vehicles into a close-together position or far-apart position, when at least one given condition is not fulfilled, regardless of the relative positioning of the said vehicles. <IMAGE>
