The absorbent pad is made by mixing a cellular fibrous material with theroplastics fibres with a ratio of between 30: 1 and 4:1, before applying the mixed fibres to a surface to obtain a uniform layer. This is then contacted by at least one hot surface, eg a heated roller (18), before application of a cover layer. Pref the mixed probe layer is applied to a paper carrier (14) in a feed pipe (9), followed by a forming station (17) ensuring an even coating, with a hot bed (16) beneath the forming station, with a temp of between 200 and 220 degrees. A heated roller (18) on the opposite side to the hot bed acts on the applied layer, with 2 further heated rollers (19) contacting both sides of the layer after the heated bed.
