To ensure compatible transmission of teletext data in the form of special signs, fine textures and colour shadings at higher WST levels, for each page of teletext complementary data in the form of one or more associated complementary pages are transmitted by the sender in addition to the basic teletext data of conventionally composed teletext pages (level 1). The complementary data for some or all teletext pages are transmitted preferably in at least one complementary page. In the receiver, the complementary page(s) associated with a specific teletext page are stored temporarily (40) and separately from the corresponding teletext page(s) and processed so that the signs associated with the basic data are displayed in those sign positions where no complementary data are present. The signs associated with the basic data in co-operation with the complementary data are displayed in those sign positions where complementary data are present.
