<p>A stencil is formed from a label including a facestock layer (52) of polyester, and a protective topcoat (50) of a polyester resin and a silicone particulate. The layer (52) has a releasable adhesive (54) applied to its lower surface, the adhesive being covered with a backing strip (58) which is coated to facilitate separation from the adhesive. A laser beam is moved so the facestock (52), and any topcoat (50), as well as adhesive in the beam path is ''cut'' or vaporized to form a sharp pattern, while leaving the backing strip (58) intact. Use of the stencil includes: removing the backing strip, applying the label to glass or other surface to be marked or etched, with the releasable adhesive holding the label where positioned, apllying etching compound to the glass through the stencil, allowing the etching compound to set for a desired period of time, removing the stencil, and wiping off any excess etching compound.</p> |
