<p>A continuous ink jet printer is disclosed which includes a nozzle (10) arranged to be vibrated by a piezoelectric oscillator (38), the nozzle, in use, passing a stream of ink (37), and the vibration of the nozzle (10) causing the stream to be broken up into individual droplets of ink a distance below the nozzle. The method of operation includes periodically making a determination of the distance of the break-up point below the nozzle as the amplitude of the electrical signal driving the oscillator (38) is controllably varied, whereby a change in the sign of the slope of the graph representing the relationship between the break-up distance and the oscillator signal amplitude is determined and the amplitude of the oscillator signal reduced to a predetermined value less than its value at the changeover point, in order to accurately control the break-up of the jet.</p> |
