In the processing, stretching or drying of leather and the like which is to be successively subjected to a plurality of consecutive processes, the problem arises of properly feeding the irregularly shaped leading edge of the material into the processing station, spreading it therein without any creases and attaining a high operating speed. To solve this problem, the flat pieces of material (FL) pass through a working path (AB) with corresponding working stations (ST1-ST3) in a sequence of working and transport stages, where, during a working stage, the flat pieces of material assume a state at reduced speed of advance in relation to the transport speed, and preferably an at least virtual standstill, and the sequence of working stations includes a layout or spreading station (ST1) and at least one stretching station (ST2) and/or at least one drying station (ST3).
