1,213,409. Metalating alkyl pyridines, quinolines and isoquinolines; alcohols. LITHIUM CORP. OF AMERICA. 13 June, 1968 [15 June, 1967], No. 28082/68. Heading C2C and C2J. Alkyl pyridines, alkyl quinoxalines and alkyl isoquinolines in which the alkyl groups have 1 to 16 carbon atoms are metallated using compounds of the formulae (1) to (6) where M is an alkali metal; R, R 1 , R 2 are each alkyl radicals with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and R 3 is a hydrogen atom or an aralkyl radical. The reaction is effected in an inert solvent (e.g. benzene) and an ether to form an ether-metallopyridine, quinoline or isoquinoline complex which can be isolated (see Example IV). In the examples, picolyllithium complexes are prepared from 2-methylpyridine and 4-methylpyridine. After reaction with benzophenone and hydrolytic working-up of the reaction product, 1,1-diphenyl-2-(2-pyridyl)-ethanol and 1,1-diphenyl-2-(4-pyridyl)-ethanol were produced respectively. |
