The refractory brickwork of a coke-oven battery has with each neighbouring pair of strengthened sections having a sliding zone between them. Each strengthened section has at least two layers of bricks which are connected together so as to prevent relative horizontal movement in the direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the battery. The occurrence of vertical open joints and cracks at right angles to the longtudinal direction of the battery is minimised so that the coke oven battery causes little pollution of the atmos. and has a high thermal efficiency.
