In a multi-stage mixer/settler for counterflow extn. of small amts. of two phases, the mixer chambers contg. a motorised stirrer in the square cross-section below a circular cross-section in the upper third upright, with the settlement chambers branching off at 45 deg. Of three connecting ports in each chamber, the top port in a settlement chamber is connected to the top port in the following mixer chamber, and the bottom port to the lower port of the preceding mixer chamber. Interchamber connections are formed by branch tubes between the individual chambers and linked by tube couplings. Axes of top and bottom branch tubes are perpendicular to the axes of the chambers they connect, while the middle tube tilts downward at about 85 deg., while the axis of the middle branch tilts upwards at the same angle. The tube couplings are resilient sleeves of PTFE joined to glass chambers. ADVANTAGE - No. of stages can be adjusted to required sepn. function in laboratory operation.
