Friction welding tool used at temps. above the m.pt. of >=1 of the layers of material being bonded together. Pref. the tool is heated to a temp. >=50 degrees C above the lowest component m.pt. Pref. welding is achieved in 0.04-1.0 secs. Pref. the tool and associated transport rolls are covered or coated with a non-stick material, viz PTFE, PTFE impregnated glass cloth or silicone rubber. claimed for continuous or intermittent lamination or sealing of packaging films, esp. if made of heat sensitive material, oriented polyolefin or olefin copolymer films, esp. for lamination with metallic foils. Offers control by tool temp. as well as tool speed can shorten cycles sufficiently to heat weld materials which tend to degrade or distort. Can be faster overall than use of adhesive coatings or used in preference to ovens for mfr. of large packages. |
