The power and stability of a single base or polybase propellent composition is increased by contacting the composition, before, during or after shaping, with an aldehyde. The propellant may be in strip or ball powder form and may be treated with an aqueous solution of the aldehyde or with formaldehyde vapour. The propellent composition includes nitrocellulose with or without nitroglycerine or nitroglycol; nitroguanidine may also be present. Other optional ingredients are diphenylamine as a stabilizer, diethyl diphenyl urea, petroleum jelly, dibutyl phthalate, sodium oxalate and acetone.</p> |
