PURPOSE: To decide a transfer loss in an optical guide by enlarging a dynamic measurement range so that the power of reflected pulse is calculated based on a specific equation. CONSTITUTION: With optical guides coupled each other without an air gap, when a radiation pulse is connected to an idle optical guide, the energy of pulses reflected an the output end surface of the idle optical guide, or a maximum power N0 , is measured. Then, the idle optical guide and a sample optical guide is slice-coupled with minimum or no air gap, and the energy of radiation pulse reflected on the output end surface of the sample optical guide, or maximum power N, is measured, and a transfer lass of the sample optical guide is decided, far enabling lass decision, with an equation. Where, l: the length of a sample optical guide,τ:a transfer factor at a slice-coupled end of an optical guide. When an optical guide is connected with no air gap,τmax =1. When an optical guide is connected with a minimum air gap,τmin =2n/(n<2> +1). A group reflactance equal to n.
