PURPOSE:To improve airtightness and ensure long lifetime by providing both positive and negative electrodes with a catalytic layer at only one side of the substrate thereof, and so arranging the electrodes in such a way that the side having the catalytic layer comes in contact both sides of a matrix. CONSTITUTION:Both positive and negative electrodes have a catalytic layer a only at one side of the substrate 2 thereof, and are so arranged that the surface having the layer 3 comes in close contact with both sides of a matrix 1. In this case, the matrix 1 is impregnated with an electrolytic solution and a positive plate is arranged at one side thereof. Also, a negative plate is arranged at the other side. As the positive electrode is supplied with oxygen gas, and the negative electrode with hydrogen gas as well, it is necessary to insulate the electrodes both electrically and airtightly. Actually, however, complete airtightness is available via the integration of the matrix 1 and both electrodes. According to this construction, long lifetime can be ensured. |
