The invention relates to a primary beam diaphragm for an X-ray tube having a first group of two pairs of diaphragm plates arranged near the focus perpendicular to one another and having a second group of two pairs of diaphragm plates arranged remote from the focus perpendicular to one another. The diaphragm plates of each pair of diaphragm plates can be adjusted jointly with the aid of control means with reference to the longitudinal axis of the diaphragm, so that a beam pyramid of desired magnitude is formed. In order to obtain a primary beam diaphragm of this type which has a simple construction and yet, nevertheless, a high precision in the setting of the diaphragm plates, setting means are proposed according to the invention which comprise a single first shaft (18) which directly connects the control means (25, 31) of one pair of diaphragm plates (23, 24) in the first group to the control means (40, 42) of a pair of diaphragm plates (33, 34), arranged parallel herewith, in the second group, and a further single shaft (13), which directly connects the control means (32) of the pair of diaphragm plates in the first group to the control means (43) of the remaining pair of diaphragm plates in the second group.
