1356271 Hydrodesulphurizing residual oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 12 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 32538/71 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] A residual hydrocarbon oil or oil fraction having a total V + Ni content above 30 p.p.m.w. and a C 5 -asphaltene content above 0À5 wt. per cent is hydrodesulphurized in the presence of catalyst particles having a pore volume above 0À30 ml./g., less than 10% of the pore volume as pores with a diameter above 1000 Š and a specific pore diameter p(Š) of 45d<SP>0.6</SP> to 140 d<SP>0.6</SP> wherein d is the specific particle diameter (mm.), or agglometates of such particles (See Division B1), the catalyst being continuously or periodically replenished. The catalyst can be used in the form of a suspension or a moving or expanded bed. When a suspension is used it may be recycled by the force of a hydrogen-powered gas lift, catalyst being separated from product liquid in a hydrocyclone, and when a moving bed is used in a vertical reactor fresh catalyst is periodically supplied to one side and substantially deactivated catalyst is removed periodically from the other side. |
