PURPOSE: To promote the carbonylation reaction of an unsatd. hydrocarbon by forming a carbonylation catalyst from a group VIII metal compd. and a phosphine represented by a specified formula or its acid addition salt. CONSTITUTION: A phosphorus compd. represented by formula I (where M<1> is a metal atom or a releasable atom or group and R<2> and R<3> are each an optionally substd. aryl or the like) is allowed to react with a compd. represented by formula II (where M<2> is a metal atom or a releasable atom or group and R<1> is optionally a substd. aryl or the like) to obtain a phosphine. The objective carbonylation catalyst is prepd. from a group VIII metal compd. and the phosphine or its acid addition salt. Whenα-acetylene, carbon monoxide and a hydroxyl-contg. compd. are allowed to react in the presence of the carbonylation catalyst, anα,β-olefinic unsatd. compd. is prepd.
