Light beams of different predetermined wavelengths (12a, 13a) are projected into the eye fundus and light scattered therefrom is detected (19, 20) to distinguish blood vessels from surrounding tissues in the eye fundus by taking advantage of differences in the light absorbing/reflecting characteristics of the fundus blood vessels and surrounding tissues.
