Pressure is applied to the fluid by compressed gas forced through valve 57 into space 28, to act on the fluid through a free piston 26 sliding in the hollow plunger. Radial bores 51 allow passage of fluid to equalize the pressure when the device is fully extended. A screw-adjusted sleeve 52, with ball detent 54, limits the degree of compression of the device.
