The time lag that is characteristic of the elastomeric material ensures that behind the wheel is formed a cavity having a surface 22, Fig. 2, that is substantially tangential to the part 12 of the wheel in contact with the material. A bulge 18, Fig. 2, is formed ahead of the wheel, and lateral bulging (not shown) beneath it. The material may be attached to the rail directly by adhesive, or by adhering it to fabric and cementing the fabric to the rail, or by securing or cementing it to a metal band which is welded to the rail, or by crimping a metal channel around the material and welding the channel to the rail. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a cart comprises a platform (8) mounted by four wheels on two tracks such as are shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 3 shows an unflanged wheel 306 rolling on elastomeric material adhered to the base of a channel.</p>
