PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of the fusion splicing operation for an optical fiber by providing a cover holding means which holds a cover at two upper and lower stage positions and equalizing the total weight of the clamp, the ball joint, a supporting rod, and a clamping spring to the clamping force of a small-diameter optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:When the cover 8 is lifted to the upper-stage position about the supporting arm 6 and held on the supporting arm 6 by the holding means, the clamping spring 8 becomes free. When the supporting arm 6 is lifted in this state, the tip of the optical fiber is pressed in the V groove of a V block V and clamped with the force of the total weight of the clamp 2, ball joint 3, supporting rod 4, and clamping spring 9. Then the clamp force to the small- sized optical fiber (f) can be optimized by equalizing the total weight of the clamp 2, ball joint 3, supporting rod 4, and clamping spring 9 to the clamping force to the small-diameter optical fiber (f). Consequently, the operation is made extremely easy and what is called one operation is enabled. |
