Both retaining pins are movable in opposed senses by a common actuating element. Pref. the pins are adjustable vertically w.r.t. the mounting surface (57) for the small sample (62) of elastic to soft-elastic material, e.g. a sealing ring. Pref., the pins are movable from a position below the mounting surface to an adjustable height over it. The pins have a constant cross-section along most of their length. USE/ADVANTAGE - Exact positioning, inclusive of small specimens, in a test axis for all testing conditions to ascertain hardness or finished quality. Copes with circular or irregular cross-sections which are normally difficult to align between two elements.
