Overlapping portions 11, 15 of a thermoplastic strap 12 positioned about a package or article are joined together by a weld joint 14 (e.g. friction, adhesive or thermowelding) and the joint includes means (26, 28) for increasing the peel separation resistance of portions 11, 15 of the joint. This prevents peel separation and so results in a joint strength that approaches the tensile strength of the strap material (11, 15) or weldment (14). The means for increasing peel strength may be wire, tape or spot weldments (additional welding) or achieved by deforming the strap such that the weldment joint 14 is in an angular orientation (Fig 5) or by having portion 11 radially outwardly or convexly curved relative to the other portion.
