A grate type furnace (3), which burns fuel which is difficult to ignite, has a fuel charging opening (1) at the upper end of the sloping hearth. The furnace is supplied with secondary air from a row of nozzles, (4) connected to a common air supply pipe (2). The pipe (2) is mounted outside the furnace (3) on the side opposite to the charging inlet (1) and the nozzles (4) are so arranged that they direct a stream of air across the flame front on a downward sloping path towards the charging inlet (1).
