Unit for welding the ends of metal braided (12) ribbed tubes (11) under protective gas (19) involves the introduction into the tube end of a hollow cone-shaped sealing body (15) which incorporates a supply line (16) and at least one discharge line (17) for the gas (19). The supply line (16) has an outlet (18) for the gas (19) at its end which extends beyond the tip of the sealing cone (15). The injection of protective gas (19) fills the inenr region (20) of the tube end so as to eject the surrounding air. It also produces a protective shield in the external region (21) around the tube end. A gas supply coupling (17) is positioned on the supply line (16). An elastic sealing ring (22) is positioned beyond the gas outlet (18) on a rod (24) and is located between two discs (221,222).
