A film of doubly refractive material (4) exists between the first polarising filter (3) and the liquid crystal cell (5). Preferably, the surface of the first filter (3) or the liquid crystal (5) is coated with the material (4); or the material (4) may be used to attach the filter (3) to the crystal (5). The material (4) is selected to maximise the rotational-double refractive properties of the crystal. ADVANTAGE - Better contrast and temperature stability.
