PLASTIC OPTICAL FIBER AND PRODUCTION THEREOF

PURPOSE:To obtain the plastic optical fiber of a polycarbonate system which is excellent in transmission loss and the thermal stability and heat resistance of the transmission loss by specifying the double refractive index of the polycarbonate which is a fiber material to >=0.002 to <=0.010 and the dry heat shrinkage at 130 deg.C to <=0.3%. CONSTITUTION:The plastic optical fiber is constituted by using the polycarbonate having >=0.40dl/g and <0.60dl/g ultimate viscosity as the core material and a polymer having the refractive index lower than the refractive index of the core material as a clad material. The double refractive index of the polycarbonate of the core material is specified to <=0.002 to >=0.010 and the dry heat shrinkage at 130 deg.C to <=0.3%. The optical fiber provided with the excellent transmission loss as well as the excellent heat resistance and excellent thermal stability in combination is obtd. in this way and the applications as the fiber for optical transmission are greatly expanded.
